Description
Description
The Miraco 571 is the 10 inch drinker ball, the size used across the MiraFount 3350 and 3465 and the heated E-Fount 3465E. The ball rides in the drinking hole, lifts when an animal pushes it with its nose and drops back over the water the moment it steps away.
A ball in good condition floats with its top about 1/2 to 1 inch below the rim of the drinking hole. One that has taken on water sits lower than that and is no longer insulating, which is what leaves a unit one cold night away from freezing down. Split seams and chewed holes are the other two reasons to swap one out.
How to be sure you have the right size
The 10 inch ball carries a BLUE PLUG. That is the quickest way to tell a 571 from the 9 1/2 inch 999 or the 10 3/4 inch 643.

A drinker ball should never sit tight against the top
Not in the fall, and not in the dead of winter. There should always be a gap between the ball and the top of the opening.
Two things happen when that gap is there. Water washes off the ball as an animal lets it go, instead of pooling on top of it and freezing into a lid. And the ball is free to move, and that movement is what keeps ice from setting up in the first place. A ball jammed tight against the top has neither, and by January you can end up with a waterer the cattle cannot open.
Use the new ball to set your water level
The ball itself is the easiest gauge you have. Water level is hard to judge on its own, but where the ball rides tells you everything.
- Put the new ball in place.
- Bring the water down. Drain some out of the trough, or let the animals drink it down, so you can see the ball settle.
- Look at where the ball is riding. You want the top of the ball sitting about 1/2 inch to 1 inch below the rim. That is the gap that keeps water washing off it and keeps it free to move.
- If the ball is riding higher than that, the water level is too high. Lower the float, let it settle again, and re-check.
Drinker Ball Questions We Get Asked
Can the plug be removed from the drinker ball?
Can the plug be removed from the drinker ball?
No. The plug is not removable. Pulling it out exposes the insulation inside the ball, and on a new ball it will void the warranty.
How do I measure a drinker ball, or how do I know I have the right one for my waterer?
How do I measure a drinker ball, or how do I know I have the right one for my waterer?
The easiest way is to look at the color of the plug in your old ball and order the ball with the matching plug color. Measurements can read a little off depending on where you put the tape, so if the plug is gone or you are not certain, find your waterer on our Miraco parts lists and order the drinker ball shown for that model.
What should I do if my drinker ball is sinking?
What should I do if my drinker ball is sinking?
A ball that sits low or sinks is waterlogged, and unfortunately there is no way to repair it. It has to be replaced.
Should the drinker balls sit tight against the top of the waterer?
Should the drinker balls sit tight against the top of the waterer?
No, and this is a common misconception. Set your water level so the balls ride about 1/2 to 1 inch below the rim, even in the dead of winter. That lets water run off the side instead of pooling on top, and it lets the ball move, which keeps the water working and helps prevent ice from building up.
