How to Clean a Ritchie Omni Automatic Waterer
As the vibrant colors of spring emerge and the temperature rises, it's time to give your Ritchie Omnifount automatic waterer some well-deserved attention. Regular maintenance and cleaning are essential to ensure your waterer's optimal functioning and longevity. This blog post'll guide you through a quick and easy spring cleaning routine for your Ritchie Omni Series automatic waterer, ensuring your livestock can access clean and fresh water throughout the season.
Gather Your Supplies: Gather the necessary supplies before diving into the cleaning process. You'll need a scrub brush, cloth or sponge. If algae or debris has adhered to the side, you may use a livestock-friendly cleaner such as vinegar, water, or another vet-approved cleaner.
Empty the Waterer: Drain water from the unit. All Omni models have a drain plug located under the valve chamber cover under the float and valve. NOTE - To stop the water flow, lift the float to activate the plunger in the valve. Unless you update the valve or float, shutting the water off to the unit is unnecessary.
Clean the Waterer Trough and Waterseal Groove: Using a sponge, cloth or scrub brush, wipe all debris from the trough toward the drain hole. Repeat for the water seal groove located under the red valve chamber cover. Pay extra attention to the areas around the drain holes, ensuring they are free from any dirt or buildup. Rinse the waterer by releasing the float to allow water to flow from the valve, allowing water and debris to drain.
Inspect for Damage: While cleaning, take the opportunity to inspect the components for any damage or mineral deposits that may impair or impact the functioning of the waterer. The most commonly replaced parts are the valve, float, valve bracket, and drain plug. Inspect the heaters as well to ensure proper function before winter.
Install drain plug and refill: Once the trough is cleaned to your satisfaction, insert the drain plug and allow the waterer to refill.
This easy spring cleaning routine will rejuvenate your Ritchie Omnifount automatic waterer and provide your livestock with fresh water. Regular maintenance and cleaning not only extend the lifespan of your waterer but also contribute to your animals' overall health and well-being. Happy spring cleaning!
